Position Announcements

The Department of Molecular Biosciences invites applications for a tenure-track, Assistant Professor position in chemical biology expected to begin August 18, 2008.  Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.  The successful candidate for the position should be eligible to work in the U.S. prior to the start date of the position. 

This appointment is intended to add faculty whose presence will strengthen not only the Molecular Biosciences department, but will also complement and reinforce existing strengths and targeted areas of growth throughout the entire university, including the life sciences, chemistry, genomics, proteomics, human development, and cell biology.  Thus, we welcome applicants whose expertise and interests in studying the functions of enzymes will help bridge these disciplines. The individual appointed will be expected to contribute to core courses in graduate and undergraduate programs in biochemistry, chemical biology and appropriate interdisciplinary programs, and will participate in university-wide programs focusing on issues related to chemical biology, biomedical research, and human biology. The successful candidate will receive a highly competitive start-up package and be expected to develop a productive, independent research program, as well as to contribute to the graduate and undergraduate teaching mission of the Department.

Duties:
1.  Establishing a vigorous research program in the general area of chemical biology leading to external grant support and publication in recognized refereed journals.
2. Teaching in undergraduate and graduate biochemistry courses.
3.  Supervising M.S. and Ph.D. dissertation studies.
4.  Participating in departmental, College and University service activities.
5.  Participating in local, national and international professional conferences and other activities appropriate to the discipline.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Doctoral degree (Ph.D., M.D., M.D./Ph.D.) in biological or chemical sciences expected by start date of appointment.
2. Publication in recognized refereed journals relevant to chemical biology.
3. A clear interest in studying the function of enzymes at the molecular level using approaches at the interface of chemistry and biology, as evidenced by letter of application and work history.
4. Commitment to high-quality undergraduate and graduate education as evidenced by teaching philosophy in the letter of application.
5.  Demonstrated strong written communication ability as evidenced by letter of application and publications.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. At least two years of post-doctoral research experience.
2.  Demonstrated ability to obtain external funding.
3.  Ability to communicate ideas clearly and to work effectively with others to carry out normal department and university activities.
